Celebrating the people who make downtown.
Ryan Sumner
Ryan describes Native Son as his "love letter to East Texas" — and it shows. Alongside his wife and co-owner Maxine, Ryan has cultivated a true nightlife in Canton through consistent live music, a welcoming atmosphere, and one of the most exciting concepts our downtown has seen. Voted best restaurant, best venue, and best chef, Native Son has also become a hub for community gatherings, opening its doors to organizations across the city. His commitment to excellence and passion for Canton's growth make him the very definition of a Downtowner.

Q.What is the Canton Main Street Program?
The Canton Main Street Program is a Main Street America Accredited revitalization program operating since 2001. We support historic preservation, small business growth, and community events in Downtown Canton — keeping our square charming, walkable, and full of life.
Q.What is there to do in Historic Downtown Canton, TX?
Downtown Canton features locally owned shops, restaurants, live music, an art studio, and seasonal festivals like our Sip N' Shops, Autumn Festival, 4th of July Parade, and Christmas Parade. We're also just steps away from the famous First Monday Trade Days — our downtown gate makes it easy to grab a bite or do a little shopping on the square before or after browsing the grounds.
Q.I own a building or business downtown — how do I make changes to it?
Any exterior change in the historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before the City issues permits. The process is simple: pick up an application from our office or website, turn it in at least 7 business days before our monthly board meeting, and we'll guide you through the rest. We also offer a local Incentive Grant to help with rehabilitation and façade improvements. Just give us a call — we love working with property owners to bring buildings back to life.
Q.How can I get involved with Canton Main Street?
Whether you're a resident, business owner, or just love our downtown, there's a place for you here. We welcome volunteers for events, committees, and beautification projects year-round. You can also attend our monthly board meetings (open to the public) or reach out about Advisory Board openings, which are appointed by City Council. Stop by Old City Hall, give us a call at 903-567-1849, or email Grichardson@cantontex.com — we'd love to meet you.
